One of the most popular designs that we make is the classic Tree of Life design. It features on everything from bespoke glass splashbacks all the way to the most grand wall panels and triptychs, so it only makes sense that we’d blog about it, right?

In a Tree of Life design, as you might expect, it’s the tree and all its features that takes centre stage. The trunk typically marks the centre point of the panel, and it can be rendered in a number of ways. There’s solid colour and powder to create a very solid, wooden look for the tree, which looks natural and realistic. The tree can also be shaped with twisting, interwoven line work that comes together to create a very stylised representation of the trunk and its branches. This approach also allows the background to shine through, which isn’t to be underestimated!

As with all fused glass art designs, there’s texture and details to be found in even the most simple background work. Bubbles and grains can be seen giving the glass its unique look, and soft gradients can mix colours in a gorgeous and seamless way. You don’t even have to settle for just flat colour, either, as your perfect Tree of Life design might have a realistic scene in the background – such as a green landscape complete with blue sky and clouds.

And of course, it’d be impossible to talk about the details of the piece without including the signature leaves of the tree. Cut by hand and picked individually for their gorgeous complementary colours, they truly bring the piece to life. Add in a little bit of personalisation from the customer, such as family pets making an appearance at the base of the tree or playing in the grass, and you have a design that is truly timeless. Why not come and get your own?

The team here at The House of Ugly Fish would love nothing more than to bring your perfect piece of glass to life.
